The last of the Vikings
Johan Bojer
I got this book from the University of Colorado Library after reading a book by Bojer called:
The Great Hunger
Both are remarkable even in the English translation. Vikings is a plain but powerful account of a winter fishing season for cod in the Lofoten islands near the arctic circle. You won't forget this book! I am not going to tell you the story, it is enough to say you are given a memorable story about the economy of North Sea fishing in the late 19th century from the point of view of the people who put everything on the line to make a living from the sea.

Johan Bojer was living in Paris for many years, 1895-2007. A close French friend was publisher and also publishing one of Paris best newspapers. Since Johan had told a lot of stories about the fishing for Skrei, Gadus morhua. And he was asked to write a serial in his friends newspaper. The last of the Vikings was therefore first released as a serial in a French newspaper before published as a book. Because of this Johan Bojer was the best known Norwegian author in France for decades.
In German: Die Lofotfischer
