Født i Belgia. Fransk statsborger.
Han var nyskapende og utfordret nye sider ved tilværelsen i alt han skrev. 
Ecuador, 1927, var en totalt anderledes presentasjon av å reise enn noen andre hadde gjort før han. 
Reisene til, Japan, Kina og India i 1930/31 påvirket han for livet.
